Polish sailor Tomasz Cichocki reaches Cape Horn during his solo circumnavigation
Polish sailor, Tomasz Cichocki, who started his solo campaign to circumnavigate the world on his maxi has reached Cape Horn. After preparing for eight years, Cichocki began his campaign in May 2011, setting
his non-stop sail from Brest, France and has now made his way to Cape Horn, Chile.
The 56-year-old Cichocki holds 40 years of sailing experience and has vast knowledge being a trained psychologist and an educator. The Polish sailor is sailing on his Delphia 40.3, called Polish Copper,
and is heading towards the Southern Ocean. He is determined to circumnavigate the world following the footsteps of former circumnavigator, Natasza Caban.
Usually, stories about adventurous voyages on the famous waters of the world were related to English speaking sailors but then the 34-year-old beautiful Polish sailor, Natasza Caban, changed that. Between
July 2007 and December 2009, she sailed around the world starting from Honolulu, Hawaii.
When Cichocki was on his non-stop voyage to circumnavigate the world, he faced several difficulties. Sadly, his non-stop adventure was negated after his boat had a collision with an object in the water,
assumed to be a semi submerged container which was about 1000nm south east of South Africa.
The impact was quite drastic as Cichocki collided against the cockpit and was knocked out. Due to the accident, he cracked a rib and injured his shoulder. During his sail in the Indian Ocean, his communication
with the tracking tower also failed but it resumed after a while.
He came to know after the investigation that the steering was jammed. He was only able to repair 20 percent of the damaged steering which is when he decided to return to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He
underwent medical treatment there and got the boat repaired completely.
The Polish circumnavigator is now sailing in the Pacific Ocean after a superb sail in the Indian and Southern Ocean. He has been on waters for 185 days now after spending almost 30 days in South Africa
for the repair of his boat and medical treatment.
Sailing in the Pacific, Cichocki has just crossed the International Date Line and on December 30, he was about 1000nm south east of New Zealand at 50.56 degrees south and 171.92 degrees west. Cichocki
is now sailing under heavy winds blowing up to 35 knots.
