There was the African-American City Councilman in Florida that got offended when a white Councilman referred to expenditures going into a black hole.  I have come across that in criminal law class where, talking about gambling, and using the 1919 White Sox, who threw the World Series leading them to be called the Black Sox, an African American student was offended by that.  

I remember being in England.  My first night there, someone iin a pub handed me a pack of cigarettes and asked "Fancy a f-a-g?" (hyphenated because it will probably be deleted).  I got po'd but that realized that means cigarette there.  

However, the most ridiculous case came when a Public Official referred to the budget for the municipality he was representing as *********.  ********* is a Scandanavian word for "Cheap, thrifty".  It is not in any way, shape or form related to the other word.  The guy almost lost his job because he was more articulate than the people complaining.

And, it even got blocked out on this.  The word is N-i-g-g-a-r-d-l-y.  Not the other word.
