I suppose this is because politcian are sometimes admired when they tell the truth, but religious leaders are afraid that if they are caught in one falsehood, you may doubt everything else that they tell you.

Religious leaders are more inclined to not admit they lie, even though they are caught doing it, as they are supposed to be morally superior.
