It's the more liberal side, as opposed to conservative side. It usually refers to democrats, not republicans.

The left wants to take away the wages of hard-working Americans and give it to people who are too lazy to work and/or use birth control. The left wants to control every aspect of our lives instead of giving us the freedom to grow and prosper on our own. The left wants to protect a barren wasteland instead of taking advantage of the natural resources there.
