what's grassroots movement?

A grassroots movement is some sort of political movement that is started by regular people.  For example, if walmart pays people to start a petition to change local laws so they can build a superstore against zoning rules, that's not a grassroots movement, but if a group of concerned citizens gets together to petetion their local governemnt to build a community center, then that's a grassroots movement.

Grassroots is meant to signify a movement that starts from the bottom up rather than the top down. It usually starts with one or two people and grows from there.
