  1. When I'm playing solo I'll be lazy and just tune to itself, using the 5th fret method. I also play a few different open chords, as I can hear discrepancies better if I compare two or three different chords.

In any other situation it's muted and to the tuner, strictly. With acoustics, I'll usually tune the A string and tune everything else off of it. The A string has higher tension than the E string, and tends to stay in tune a little better, so I tend to self-tune from the A string if I don't have a tuner.

I'm obsessive about staying in tune, and I've set up all of my guitars to stay in tune as long as humanly possible without using locking tuners and whatnot.

Checking tuning takes between 30 seconds and a minute and a half, depending on if it's more or less in tune vs completely out. I'll take my time if it's before a gig, often tuning it two or three times as it warms to ambient temperature (coming in out of the cold vs warm club). Temperature drift or no, I don't take stage without being as close to in tune as I can reasonably be.

  2. i can tune my guitar to any song on the radio while listening to it and be playing with it before it is over. by ear...

  3. Majority of the time I use a tuner, and it doesn't take too long. Maybe around 3 minutes or so.

If I do it by ear it takes longer. I gotta work on developing my aural skills.

  4. Hi NewLife

Actually, once I have my A-440 (I only use tuning fork) , it takes me 30 seconds .

But, I have been tuning and fixing guitars over the last 20 years so there' s nothing to brag about. It's the least I can do.

  5. With my electric tuner it takes me about 1-2 minutes!

  6. I use a tuner to get the low E, and then I tune the rest myself.  It's a bit more accurate that way because the guitar is tuned to itself, which is more important than being tuned to a tuner.

It only takes a couple of minutes. I use harmonics instead of the fifth fret method because it's much faster, simpler, and more accurate.

  7. It takes me like 5 or 6 minutes by ear.

  8. By ear it takes around 5 minutes.

By electric tuner it takes about 3.

My acoustic guitars always take a bit longer to tune than the electric ones...
