Question:

Poll: Cars and Pedestrians?

In your city, town, village or burg, do the drivers yield to pedestrians? They do in my city, but reluctantly and act huffy that they have to yield. What's their problem? I'm the one on foot, and they're sitting down, have music and heat or AC.

  1. Do you have a Driver's Licence?

When a person drives a vehicle, they tend to be impatient with pedestrians and cyclists and anyone slowing them down.

When a person walks and becomes a pedestrian or cyclist, they tend to become rather self-righteous and become irritated with those vehicles driving TOO FAST and not paying attention to THEM.

Personally, I have been a pedestrian in busy cities and small towns. I have also been a cyclist riding some 20 miles each way through busy traffic to and from work.

I work as a Driving Instructor and am always reminding my students to watch for pedestrians and cyclists and skateboarders and any other human or animal or vehicular activity which might "get in the way", while operating a motor vehicle.

In the air,  and on the water, the craft with the least power gets the most right of way. It's common sense really.

We are human though, and we all have flaws.

The more power we HAVE anywhere in life, the MORE Self-Discipline we have to use, don't you think?

  2. Courteous drivers will usually yield to pedestrians,  it truly is a safety issue.   Letting the pedestrian go first allows a driver to keep them in sight as they cross and uses their vehicle to ensure pedestrian safety.

    Self-centered jackasses don't yield!

  3. In Pa. the pedestrian has the right of way in a crosswalk, but it is not absolute, they cannot just blunder out into traffic they are still responsible for their own safety and have to make sure the way is safe for them to cross. old saying is you can be right all you want but it still hurts when you get hit .

  4. So, you choose to be on foot. Why are you so huffy about those who choose to drive?

Nevermind the fact that a road is meant for motor transport. For someone on foot to interrupt the flow of that motor transport, is a nuisance.

Surely you wouldn't enjoy cars driving on sidewalks, when you're trying to walk?

    Put it in perspective.

  5. It is NJ law to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. So yeah, they have to. I always do. Pedestrians first, cars second. If you have an accident, the driver will be charged with manslaughter if they kill the pedestrian in a crosswalk.. If he/she is outside of a crosswalk, it is different if the driver didn't knowingly see the pedestrian.
