Is ethanol as an alternate fuel source not viable because it costs too much too produce or are the oil companies using political muscle to squash the movement? Do you know of any books written on the subject?

Will producing corn for fuel affect food supply?

  1. We use green-fuel made from discarded ostrich fat from a local abattoir. It works great.

Growing food crops doesn't mean less food, it means more expensive food, thanks to the open market.

  2. Corn in the stomach followed by corn in my personal distiller. I believe taking one of the oldest food suppliers down for fuel is doing anyone any good.

Lets try what South America is doing with sugar cane instead.Lets try about 15 different things and pull out all the stops and try many avenues. But lets stop using food crops for making ethanol. Costs more to make than refining oil anyhow.

  3. in my stomach.

  4. Making fuel out of corn is a stupid political trick, designed to get the votes of people in corn-growing states.  It has to be subsidized in order to work, and it is literally causing hunger and starvation in other parts of the world.  How can anyone feel good about making other people starve???

Ethanol works in Brazil because it is on the Equator and gets much more Sun than America does.  The switchgrass that Ethanol is made of in Brazil grows about a foot a day!  Ethanol does not work in America.

  5. Using ethanol is an excuse to NOT drill for oil anywhere in the US or even off the coasts!   It does cost too much to produce alcohol for fuel, farmers seeing how they can make more money growing something used for alcohol only increases the cost of food we eat!

Producing corn for fuel already has caused your food to be higher priced!  Cows eat corn, the price of milk is higher.  Cattle and chickens eat corn some times and the price of that meat is higher priced.  Even your box of cereal is higher priced if it is a corn product.

Just remember the production of alcohol for fuel will never replace the need for oil.   The US needs new and cheaper sources of oil and we will need that oil for the rest of our lifetimes!

  6. corn in your stomach. If everyone used ethanol, we would have to turn our yards into corn fields!!!

  7. TUMMY

  8. - using corn for fuel will reduce the food supply.  (even if there weren't any floods, which i think i read will reduce the corn crop by as much as 10%.)

    - the oil companies are making only a token resistance because they know that, with all that's required to grow the corn, they'll be selling just as much oil as they would have been otherwise.

    - presumably you've seen the price increase in food.  most of that is because of oil.  but much of that is because of the price last year.  just wait until the fall --- you ain't seen nutin yet.
