Not personally....I have been very lucky so far. When I go abroad, I usually like to stay in a 4-star hotel (especially since air tickets for short haul flights are relatively inexpensive these days)....and while I have been a *little* disappointed with one or two, I could certainly not describe any of them as "slums". I do remember one occasion when my mother took me to Paris, though, (I think my elder brother was with us, too), when my mother was not very impressed with the hotel when we arrived. I really don't remember much about it, though....it was a long time ago.

My mother gave me some good advice when I booked my trip to Salzburg in 2005. She suggested that I should reckon to spend a decent amount of money on the hotel....because the flight was relatively cheap. To this day, I think she was right.

Awww you poor thing, no i have only ever been on Holiday once in my life time and we stayed in a resort that was pure heaven...cant ask for a better place that has a poolside bar now can i, unless i were to drown from to many daiquiri's...hehe

I wouldn't go as far as saying it was a slum och total dump but I now always check forums and guest reviews before booking a hotel.

Judging a hotel by the photos on the booking site is always a bad idea, by taking a photo from the right angle one can make a tiny pool look like a huge one and the room photos is usually taken as brand new or after renovation.
