Question:

Poll: Is violence ever really the answer?

Normally a civilised individual, sometimes in daily life, I get so frustrated, I momentarily think about lashing out, but I never do.

When the scrawny littly idiot on the tube stands on my foot, or the fat project manager is ordering me around.....

Does anyone else get these thoughts or should I seek therapy?

Can anyone argue any circumstance where violence IS the answer?

  1. No, violence only leads to additional problems!!!! But, yeah, the feelings are normal, so is not acting on them!!!!!

  2. You are to be congratulated on showing restraint.  Violence is never the answer because it, in itself, begets violence.  Much better to ignore the situation.  I have also been in such situations and ignored the goading  Seeing they were not getting to me, my verbal aassailants soon stopped and went off, perhaps in search of other victims.  Talk is a good way to calm a situation.  Talk and keep talking, keeping the volume down and not resorting to verbal assault.  Again, my assailants, seeing they were not getting anywhere, let go and went someplace else.  Carry on as you are and soon the fat project manager will tire of his rantings.  And a narrowing of the eyes will soon get the message through to the scrawny little idiot that he is on dangerous ground.

  3. Someone is beating the cr*p out of your mom.

You tell them to stop repeatedly. They don't.

  4. Never....

  5. Today, I hit my brother because he said something rude about my friend. Violence in this case was the answer because he had said rude comments about this friend in the past and I told him that it offended me but he did it again. By definition, the purpose of sanctions is to prevent the public from seeking their own retribution, so if proper sanction are not in place it is only acceptable to punish the offender yourself.

  8. I think violence is only needed in a situation where all other options have been exhausted.

    perhaps situations like:

A guy keeps hassling you at a bar, and begins to get a bit physical...

A woman being approached by a would-be rapist or mugger...

there are times when violence is the answer, but never before talk/communication has been exhausted as a means to diffuse the situation.

  9. The actual act of violence isn't the answer...there are laws against it.

HOWEVER, the act of imagining or just thinking about what you'd like to do is not punishable by law...so let your imagination run wild!! : ]
