    OBITUARY

Chivalry ( also known fondly as "Chivy Chiv", "Chivy Chase", "Chivy Chivette")

Born: Cadbury Castle, Somerset, England 1500

Died: mid- 1960s, United States, generally

Cause of death -- After a long battle with women trying to hold open doors and generally "protect" them, women succesfully won independence and started a still-to-be-appreciated battle for equality.  Men, country-wide, continued to attempt the standard "physical exertion" tasks, and were, indeed, expected to do so; however, the tasks traditionally assigned to women were now shared.

A majority of men were for equality and remain that way; however, some argue that women want superiority, not equality.  Men, not completely but generally, are still expected to do anything that was traditionally a man's job- fix the car, change tires, repair things, work while the woman stays home with children and even when the children are in school, etc., but now the men are also expected to share in the women's traditional role.

Some men perceive this as unfair.

Chivalry is survived by a few of us good guys who, even though we might think it unfair, still do what a man does, which includes shutting up and assisting in half the woman's traditional roles, as well, without asking the woman to share in half of the man's traditional roles.

  3. Was it ever alive?

  4. A childhood friend of mine had a saying in the 70's..."chivalry didn't die, women killed it." In some ways, to feel equal and strong, we did shun chivalrous acts, but there is still some of it around.

In the past week, I have had several doors held open for me, male friends offering to carry things for me, and even had an older man tip his hat to me and smile. These little acts are especially noticeable when I wear a summery dress. If someone treats a woman with chivalrous behaviour, or even polite behaviour, we should be grateful and encourage it with a nice smile. This doesn't make me less of an individual, it just brings back a more genteel time and who couldn't use more of that?

That childhood friend was so proper, he would always walk on the outside of the sidewalk closer to the road, so I was safe; he would come with me any time I wanted to walk into town (two blocks away) so my reputation wouldn't be harmed by being a single woman walking alone; he even risked his life once for a friend of mine who forgot her asthma medicine, and crossed a flooded raging river, hand over hand on one metal cable to get her medicine for her, and ran over a mile back with it. He still writes long letters in actual handwriting on actual paper, and married a very lucky gal who appreciates his old fashioned ways. Whenever we see him, I think of his proper and friendly behavior with great respect.

  5. Women killed chivalry a long time ago........................wanting to be independent of men, wanting to prove something!  Prove what?  I don't know, but thanks to the feminist, men don't feel it is necessary to treat the female type like a lady.

  8. No it isn't dead.. but it isn't taught to children as much.  Therefore they grow up knowing nothing about it.
