Poll offshore drilling vs reusable energy?

Personally i'm against offshore drilling for fossil fuels and for reusable energy myself.

What's your pick and opinion?

I'm completely against it, and it nauseates me to even think about it.  People who have no respect for the ******* environment support this horrible practice.

They say off-shore drilling will not lower gas prices. What the American consumer need to do is to make sacrifices and change their behavior rather than to take the easier way out.

I think it would be nice if we could have reusable energy in abundance, but then they have problems too. Take turbines that utilize ocean current: kills ocean life. Windmills: kills birds. Solar Energy: Takes up too much room, not efficient and ugly as sin; as well, limited in the time they can be used and takes land away from the trees, animals and other forms of vegetation.

In Alberta we have the oil sands. They have their issues that I disagree with; for example, recently a lake was polluted. A short time ago a flock of birds was killed when they landed in a waste water area.

I won't lie, I fear nuclear, and the waste products are ugly to deal with.

However, given the current climate, and the cost of oil, I fear that we should be seeking domestic oil vs. foreign. Russia, for example, is debt free. That's a scary thought. How much money does Iran have?

The cost of oil could drop significantly if off-shore oil was utilized in America to its full potential.

So, sadly, I have to say I am in favour of off-shore drilling.

I've been preaching it for years:  Alternative energy:

Hydro

Geothermal

Wind

Solar

All are totally clean energy sources.  Bio-fuels still need burning, which results in pollution.  However, if bio-fuels are going to be used, the source should not compete with food.  Drilling simply perpetuates the inevitable because oil is a deletable resource.  The U.S. could have been the leader in clean energy.  Had we stayed on course with President Carter's plan, we would most likely be the leading manufacturer of equipment used for harvesting clean energy.  We also would not be in the current predicament.

1) Why is it a dichotomy?   Why can't we do both?

2) If you're against it, you don't have to do it - that doesn't give you the right to keep others from doing it.

3) Most viable forms of renewable energy are in the area of power generation, whereas oil is used for transportation.

Less than 2% of the power consumed in the US is generated using oil.

I think that people are delusional if they believe we can move to alternative fuels in the next 20 years.  We need to drill offshore while still developing  better sources.  It is not as simple as just dropping oil and using alternatives. It is going to take time and money and we have to support our current situation to get there.  Environmentalists are dumb, they are so unrealistic because of their support of nature.  This planet was and will be here way longer than any human.  Sure we can save all the animals and plants we want but who is gonna save us.  Survival of the fittest.

Fossil fuels are the root of the earths problems, from economic, environmental and especially wars for oil...all this to drive our transportation, make cheap throw away products and drive power generation.

Sometimes you just have to say enough, bite the bullet and

do what you know is right.

Drilling Offshore and in the Arctic would only be placed for sale on the world market where the US would again get shafted by big energy....

Let's let the markets determine which energy sources we should use - not the government.  Right now, and for the forseeable future, oil is the most economical because it powers existing technologies and it is still - believe it or not - abundant.  However we all know that it's resource is limited so therefore, strides are being made in alternative fuels and technologies.  Someday, as these become more abundant and oil becomes more scarce, these new forms of energy will take over.

Drilling and renewable energy sources.

Why does it have to be an either or situation?  That being said, we should be drilling anywhere their are supplies of fossil fuels, but that is not going to solve the problem by itself.  Just as renewable energy isn't going to solve the energy by itself.  We need to utilize every energy source possible, as we gradually become energy independent.  The infrastructure of this country didn't develop over night and it won't be fixed over night.  Besides, oil isn't only used in the production of gasoline.  We are still going to need oil because it is used in producing everything from plastics to the greases, which are used to lubricate moving parts.  We are still going to need oil if you wish to listen to your plastic encased Ipod while pedaling your oil lubricated bike down the street.  Why are you against offshore drilling?  During Hurricane Katrina there were no oil spills, so it can't be argued that offshore drilling poses a significant threat to the environment.  The offshore rigs are placed offshore where they are not visible, so they are not eyesores.  We are one of the few countries that refuses to drill offshore.  Even countries that are leading the charge against Global Warming and who have implemented strong policies against carbon emissions are drilling offshore.  They realize that oil is still going to be important to us for quite awhile, even if we are reducing our usage.  China is drilling fifty miles off the coast of Florida.  We are being laughed at by other countries of the world.

Both. Plus cutting back on wasteful uses. It is not true that we are not drilling offshore. Go out the Louisiana bayous and you will find lots of oil rigs. If for some reason, you can't find them, follow a fishing boat; the rigs are hot spots for weakfish, spadefish, and giant grouper.Offshore drilling does not destroy the environment; it enhances it.

I would not, however, support wrecking ANWR for short-term gains to the oil companies already reporting record windfall profits. If they really need crude, they can tap the oil sands and shales.

We're still going to need oil until alternative energy becomes widespread, afforable and in everyday use.  There are going to be learning curves and even small disasters when we finally get going.  Renewable energy sources are needed, but we will still need oil for a long time.
