My husband and I are moving into a gorgeous new apartment, and I need kitchen ideas. I want to buy some nice accessories (towels, a valance for over the sink, pictures, etc.) and I need to know which theme to go for. Here are my thoughts for themes:

- grapes/wine

- coffee/cafe

- french bistro

- tomatoes

- chili peppers

Feel free to vote for one of these themes, or suggest a creative one of your own. Also, if you have kitchen decorating tips that I can use for an apartment kitchen (I can paint the walls and change minor things, but no knocking out walls or ripping out cabinets or anything) please feel free to share. I am open to anything!!! :) Thanks in advance!!!

  1. Just go with different things you like.My personal things are country.I'm crazy about sunflowers. So I use sunflower dishes, really cute picture frame with dried sunflowers around it and a ceramic on hanging over the sink.I've got different baskets on top of my cabinets with greenery and flowers. My walls are a nice green color. You can find very cute cards, like greeting cards and frame them.It works great instead of buying expensive pictures.Just pick some things you really like and they should fit together in your kitchen instead of using one theme.Lace type look good.Off white or beige goes with everything.Just have fun decorating. The themes you have picked I'm sure you could use a little of each and would look great too.

  2. grapes and wine is so easy to decorate you can basically find it anywhere, plus its a very attractive theme which most people find very enjoyable.

  3. Why you have to do a theme?  Most kitchens I see with themes like this...the people go WAY overboard.

Why don't you just find something you like, like a cool fabric for your valance, or a really neat wall clock, or some cool art piece for the wall, and just pull some colors from that for the rest of your accessories.

Don't get everything with one theme on it, you don't need a kitchen with a grape valance, and grape dish towels, and grape dishes, and coffee mugs with grapes on them, and little rugs with grapes on them, and pictures of grapes on the wall....it's too themey!!

Go streamlined-just one "art" piece, with colors and textures pulled out to match, it will last you so much longer!

I have this really neat little painting of a lemon that's sitting on a brown table top with a green background and it's hanging over my sink (my backsplash goes all the way up and is granite behind my sink, the painting is hanging on the granite).  It's a close up of the lemon, the lemon is pretty much the only thing in the painting.   i LOVED this painting when I first saw it becuase it was so simple, but the paint on it is so thick that it is very detailed.  I painted my walls in my kitchen the color green of the background of the painting.  I have some yellow canisters on the counter for flour/sugar/ etc that are very close to the yellow of the lemon.  I have some brown throw rugs in front of the sink and back door that match what the lemon is sitting on.  And I have a couple of green and brow striped dish cloths that are hanging on the oven handle.  I used that one inspiration and did the whole kitchen off of it, everything else is simple.  I have a simple stainless clock hanging on the wall.  All of my accessories (paper towel holder, fruit basket, stuff like that...) are black woven wire.  Simple, I love it!

I say forget the theme, go CLEAN!

  4. tomatos

  5. well I incorporated a New orleans theme in my kitchen using the coffee/bistro/grapes/wine thing all in one. Coffee rugs are everywhere now and so are the wine ones too. I have souvenirs from NO as well that I used for decoration such as voodoo dolls and an actual Mardi Gras poster from 1997 and tons of beads. Gives me fond memories of a place I loved so much before Katrina.
