Polona Hercog squashes Varvara Lepchenko in to book a spot in round three – Family Circle Cup 2012
World number 38, Polona Hercog, dumped the 25-years-old American, Varvara Lepchenko, to qualify for the third round of the Family Circle Cup on Wednesday. She won the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 taking just 75 minutes to accomplish
the triumph.
She had lost the last meeting between the two players that was played in the second qualifying round of the Medibank International in Sydney, two years, ago. However, she was not going to squander another opportunity to build a
lead in the head-to-head series. With this triumph, the 21-years-old Slovenian has now clinched victories in two out of three face-offs against the American.
The Slovenian started the match in aggressive fashion; registered a serve hold and followed it up with a brilliantly assembled breakthrough. She squandered one opportunity but lashed on to the second advantage. Both players won
respective serve games in the rest of the set that allowed the Slovenian to have her nose in front courtesy to an early breakpoint.
Nothing changed for the local representative in the second set. She lost two breakpoints early that gifted a resounding 4-0 lead to her rival. The Slovenian contestant was not in any kind of a mood to squander such a classic opportunity
to take the match and book a spot in the next round of the tournament.
Lepchenko created just one chance to break her competitor’s serve but wasn’t able to convert that as well. It was a thumping triumph for the Slovenian who locks horns with the third seed French, Marion Bartoli, in the following
round clash.
Total points played in the contest were 103 and Hercog dominated the show by bagging 60 off them. Lepchenko was just unlucky and dropped crucial serve games at pivotal stages of the game that led to her downfall. She wasn’t able
to convert the breakpoints as well and was extremely poor with her first serve conversion rate.
The Slovenian was terrific with her first serves having won 24 out of 32 points and denied her opponent with any opportunity to take control of the proceedings. The next battle will definitely test her to limits; Bartoli is not
going to down easy.
