Polona Hercog surprises Julia Goerges in round two – Swedish Open 2012
Tournament favourite, Julia Goerges, crouches out in the second round at the hands of the 86th ranked Slovenian, Polona Hercog. It was a terrible day for the second seed German who lasted an hour and 42 minutes at the
clay courts of the Bastad, Sweden on the eve of Wednesday. Hercog registered victory in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-2.
First six games went by without any drama at all. However, there were several chances created by both players to take a lead in a form of a breakpoint but they were squandered and the scores stayed level at 3-3.
However, the most awaited breakthrough came in the seventh game when the 21-year-old underdog won four straight points to stamp her authority and frustrate the out-of-form German. Goerges was extremely angered by her performance
in that game. However, she did well to break serve back in a ‘do or die’ game.
It was the 10th game of the match and the German picked up the moment, trounced her rival and levelled the scores. Both players swapped breakpoints to enforce a tie-breaker round. It was an interesting battle and both
players looked equally talented, meeting blow-by-blow.
A suicidal mistake from the German in the form an unforced error proved to be her final say in the first set as her rival moved on with a lead. It was a terrible ending for the second seed German who is ranked 24th in
the world.
Previous encounter results favoured the 23-year-old German. However, the Slovenian had a chance to level the head-to-head 2-2 and she did that in classic fashion. Trailing one set down, Goerges looked a bit out of her socks and
the pressure played its part in the second half of the match.
The German commenced the second set in emphatic fashion; won the opening serve game and broke serve to take a lead of 2-0. However, a thunderous onslaught from the Slovenian starlet completely slaughtered the German in all respects.
Hercog won six games on the trot including three breakpoints. She looked absolutely stunning in that run of form and the German beauty queen was helpless.
"I'm just really happy to get this victory," Hercog stated. "She was not an easy opponent, so it's great for me to get through this match, especially after the tough time that I had yesterday. I'm trying to get better with every
match."
Tsvetana Pironkova will be Hercog’s next opponent.
