Question:

Polygamous Texas Sect- Irony? Anyone else notice this?

So, I'm sure by now everyone's heard of this Polygamous sect in Texas with the abused women and children. In case you've been living under a rock for quite a while, here's the news story:

http://www.keyetv.com/news/state/story.aspx?content_id=7e8d29ca-dc90-40be-a4ea-8a8ae38e63d1

Now, in this sect, there has been reports of alleged abuse, and women recounting that if there husbands were trying to punish them, they'd TAKE AWAY THEIR KIDS. Yes, read that again, THE HUSBANDS WOULD TAKE AWAY THE KIDS. No wonder these women are denying everything, now. The main form of abuse to them has been the removal of their children when they were in the sect, and now they're out in the world and, for telling the truth about what went on inside the sect, the kids are being taken away. Is it any surprize? I just thought I'd bring this up, mother's day being yesterday, and this irony being so blatant that we don't notice up. Please share your comments and thoughts.

  1. You're absolutely right and what not, but my personal take is, why be surprised at the actions of any humans, let alone the ones leading these polygamous lives.

It's perfectly predictable human nature actually, when you let certain thoughts, fears, and beliefs control you.

What do I have to say?

They're humans just like you and I who are prone to abuse, and all sorts of things.

Everyone concentrates on how WOW< there are repots of abuse. They're taking the kids away! OMG< the sky is falling they're evil!

When in all reality, evil as they may be, you and I probably know of un-polygamous people who have abuse in their families and court orders which may not allow one parent to see the children, etc.

These sects aren't as horrific as people are making them out to be,but at the same time,

it's a tragedy that it has to occur in this day and age.

  2. Sadly I believe the women are victims from both the way they've been treated within the sect and now are also victims from the way the state has treated them. I wish they would at least be allowed to see their children. In some cases they have been able to, but not all because they have been told not all the children have case workers and therefore they cannot see the children.

I do believe the children (especially the young girls) have been abused in the sect and I think it was right to remove them until the full truth is known. It was a drastic move on the part of the state, but what do they say...drastic situations require drastic measures!

  3. Taking away the kids wasn't the only form of  punishment for women.  Watch the HBO series, Big Love, a drama about a man with three wives living in suburban Utah.  One of the wives comes from an FLDS compound and so we get a glimpse into their lives.  What we see about FLDS and LDS is that men have ALL the power in this cult.  A woman must submit to her husband in any desire he has, even it he wants to give their pubescent daughter to a 60 year old.

Basically these spirit wives  have no legal rights so a big way to keep them in line is shunning by the other wives, being taken from current husband and given to another, physical punishment like spanking and finally the worst is dropping them on the side of the road to fend for themselves.

The government was right to interfere since this problem is growing out of control since this compound was one that split off from another overgrown compound.  I want to know what they are going to do with the one from which they originally came.

  4. Well, the state took away their children for the good of their children, the so called "Christian" men of the FLDS took away the women's children to punish them. That's a big difference. And in fact it was the actions of the men inside the FLDS in complete defiance of the law that led to the state taking away the kids, so in either case the FLDS men are the responsible party. These women were little more than brainwashed slaves, the media is being way too lenient about this sick cult.

Interesting and valid point though, it is ironic, and a good basis for a discussion. :)

  5. I find it ironic that someone, including the mothers, would equate  the children taken by abusive husbands and removed from any protection that the mother's could give, with the removal of the children by a sovereign government for the protection of the children...and, more likely than not, with visitation.

  6. Huh.  You're right, I didn't even notice this the first time through.

Your tax dollars at work, yet again...
