Polyurethane on a laminate "wood" floor?

can I put polyurethane a FAKE wood laminate floating floor after installation on my concrete floor in the basement?

  1. you would basically be putting a non UV stabilized plastic coating on top of a plastis laminate.  The prep work would be difficult and the finish would be mediocre.

    can you? yes. should you? prob not.

    PS don't forget the vapor barrier if neccesary.


  2. Polyurethane tends to yellow....I wouldn't use it.

Yes you can, but you must first rough up the surface.  The laminate is plastic and therefore will not take the adheasion you will need for a good job.  I would suggest taking either 000 or 0000 steel wool and go over the floor very lightly so as not to "burn" through the pattern, and give the floor enough roughness for adheasion.  It won't take much, only very light scratches, and the polyurithane will adhear.

  4. I think you will have trouble making the polyurethane stick.  At best you would have to sand the floor enough to give it some "tooth" for the poly to cling to.

  5. do you have a dry basement, if your not sure i wouldnt. they will warp or can get moldly. humidity can do the same thing
