Polyurethane on my painted corn hole set turned yellow?

I made a corn hole set and we painted it real nice and then put clear polyurethane on it and when it dried it kind of blobed up in spots ( like water on water-resistant surfaces) and dried and turned yellow. it wasnt that bad at first but now its really yellow and the white stripes on it look yellow. WHY did it do this? any way to fix it besides sanding it all off?

  1. This is due to moisture still present in the corn. I suggest using the corn for popcorn and let it dry thoroughly. This variety of corn should dry without losing color and texture. Once thoroughly dry, try it again. I believe you will get the result you're looking for.

  2. polyurethane is not really designed to go over paint, rather stain or natural wood. oil based poly will dry yellow. better choices would be spar varnish, clear brushing lacquer, or polycrylic topcoat. you will have to sand off the topcoat and re-apply one of these. if you used latex paint, the lacquer or polycrylic will dry clear, not yellow.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Use steel wool and re-apply a clear coat.
