Pomeroys Pistol and Tar Heel Mom will look to down the field of seven in the Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park
The six-year-old mare, Tar Heel Mom, missed out on a Grade 1 win at Saratoga in her last start, while winning a Grade 2 race previously on the same venue. She would be looking to set the score right in the Grade 2 $150,000 Foxwoods Gallant Bloom Handicap
at Belmont Park on 24 September.
Amy Tarrant trained 3-year-old filly, Pomeroys Pistol, had a similar sort of outing in this year’s Saratoga meet, as she participated in two consecutive Grade 1 sprints, but finished second in both of them.
The Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap is for older fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, and it reeled in seven older fillies and mares to run over a distance of 6 ½ furlongs.
Trained by Stanley Hough for owner Alex Rankin, Tar Heel Mom has had a very successful 2011 season, and out of 8 starts this year, the mare has gone to win 4 times with 3 finishes on the board.
The daughter of Flatter bagged herself a Grade 3 win in the season opener, when she participated in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream Park over a distance of six furlongs, under jockey Alan Garcia, on 15 January, 2011.
After a couple of wins and second place finishes, Tar Heel Mom went to Saratoga, and she steam rolled her foes in the Grade 2 Honorable Miss on 7 August, 2011, as she announced her arrival in grand style.
However, the experienced mare couldn’t keep up with Hilda’s Passion, who denied Tar Heel Mom the opportunity to land her first Grade 1 win of the season, as she rolled in behind her for a second place finish.
Winning a Grade 2 race also in the first month of the 2011 season, Pomeroys Pistol missioned out on Grade 3 Old Hat and bounced back in her second start as she got the better of Evil Queen and Dancinginherdreams in the Grade 2 Forward Gal at Gulfstream Park
on 30 Januray, over six furlongs.
However, she rolled in second in the Grade 1 Prioress and the Grade 1 Test, in her last two starts, which were at Saratoga, and will be looking to enter the winning circle at Belmont Park after winning the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap.
