Pomeroys Pistol bagged the Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park against an older bunch, next stop Breeders’ Cup
The 3-year-old Amy Tarrant trained filly, Pomeroys Pistol, coming off two second place finishes in the summer Saratoga meet, gets it right in the Grade 2 $150,000 Foxwoods Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park on 24 September.
It was for the first time that the daughter of Pomeroy was meeting older fillies and mares, as she dominated five other fillies and went all out in the mid stretch to win the 6 ½ furlongs Belmont Park special, with a winning time of 1 minute and 16.60 seconds.
The sophomore filly, Pomeroys Pistol, had only one graded stakes' win to show prior to the Gallant Bloom Handicap, in the seven furlong long Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes.
On 30 January, 2011, at Gulfstream Park with Paco Lopez aboard, Pomeroys Pistol kept Dancinginherdreams and Evil Queen at bay to hit the wire ahead of the lot in 1 minute and 22.89 seconds.
Out of Prettyatthetable by Point Given, Pomeroys Pistol then went to Monmouth Park after two more starts.
Finishing on the board once and a sixth place finish in the previous race, the filly spurred up a pleasant surprise for her connections in the Just Smashing Stakes on 11 June.
Under C DeCarlo, Pomeroys Pistol targeted the 6 furlong dash, and popped it with ease, leaving behind Maple Forest and Honey Chile who finished second and third, respectively. The victorious filly topped the distance in 1 minute and 9.02 seconds.
In the Gallant Bloom Handicap, as the race unfolded, Pomeroys Pistol got herself into a good position, and fired all cylinders approaching the stretch and pulled clear to win by four lengths over Jeremiah Englehart trained Tamarind Hall.
Amy Tarrant was all praises for her filly after the race, and she must be excited about running her in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
Meanwhile, Pomeroys Pistol will be headed home for a nice rest, according to her trainer, and afterwards on 31 October, the filly will be shipped on to Kentucky from Monmouth.
Lovely Lil finished 1 ½ lengths behind Tamarind Hall for third, Moontune Missy fourth, while Tar Heel Mom and Buckleupbuttercup completed the order of finish.
