Pomeroys Pistol caps off her season with a graded stakes win in the Sugar Swirl Stakes
If only, Pomeroys Pistol, had won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs on 4 November, 2011, where she finished fourth, the story would’ve been a lot different for Amy Tarrant trained 3-year-old filly, who has achieved more than
she was expected to in her sophomore season.
The filly has raced up north and down south throughout the season, but the venue she prefers the most is Gulfstream Park where she began her season winning graded stakes race, and now she has ended her season winning a graded stakes race at Gulfstream Park.
The Florida bred daughter of Pomeroy, out of mare Prettyatthetable by Point Given, Pomeroys Pistol in a field of eight fillies and mares bounded away at the top of the stretch to land the Grade 3, $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park’s dirt course
at about six furlongs on 10 December, 2011.
It was the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes which Pomeroys Pistol captured in only her second start of the season at Gulfstream Park on 30 January, 2011, over at seven furlongs against competitive field.
She conjured up a swift move swinging off the bend down to the stretch going past Dancinginherdreams and Evil Queen, who finished second and third, respectively, and topped the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 22.89 seconds.
With Javier Castellano aboard, Pomeroys Pistol covered the 6 furlong distance in the Sugar Swirl in 1 minute and 9.35 seconds.
"I had a beautiful trip, a dream trip," Castellano said. "She is a really nice filly, really straightforward. I love her. You can do whatever you want with her. I saved all the ground I could and when I put her outside, she took off. She was much the best
in the field.”

The pace setter, Third Chance, broke sharply from the outside to set brisk fractions of 22.30 seconds and 44.80 seconds, but then gave way to other contestants to finally finish sixth.
Pica Slew was in pursuit of the leader, but couldn’t make much of the situation as she finished second to Pomeroys Pistol.
