Pomeroys Pistol goes in against older rivals for the first time in the Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park
The Hardacre Farm owned 3-year-old filly, Pomeroys Pistol , has been finishing on the board in her last two races, coming second in back to back races against 3-year-old fillies. She will face older rivals for the first time in the Grade 2, $150,000 Foxwoods
Gallant Bloom Handicap at Belmont Park.
It is a challenge for her connections to find Pomeroys Pistol a tough race for the preparation of the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, and owner and trainer, Amy Tarrant, did not want an easy race before the big one.
According to Amy Tarrant, the Gallant Bloom Handicap is by no means an easy race, and thinks that her filly has landed on the right spot, when it comes to a tough prep race for a Breeders’ Cup event race.
The Gallant Bloom Handicap will be run over a distance of 6 ½ furlongs, and the race will draw a competitive field of seven fillies and mares.
The daughter of Pomeroy, out of Prettyatthetable by Point Given, Pomeroys Pistol has been consistent, as she came in just behind Her Smile in the Grade 1 Prioress Stakes to finish second at Belmont Park on 4 July, 2011, over a distance of 6 furlongs.
Turbulent Descent denied Pomeroys Pistol in her next race to enter the winners' circle, as she was downed again to finish second in the Grade 1 Test Stakes, at about 7 furlongs at Saratoga on 6 August, 2011.
In the Gallant Bloom Handicap, Pomeroys Pistol will be facing the likes of 11 time stakes winner, Tar Heel Mom, and Tamarind Hall, who went on to win the Bed O’ Roses Handicap,
Being the lone 3-year-old filly on the field, it will be an uphill task for Pomeroys Pistol.
The 3-year-old filly certainly merits consideration for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, after her consistent performances throughout the year with two wins and 4 second place finishes out of 7 starts this season.
However, it’s a good choice of race by her connections, because Pomeroys Pistol will eventually face fillies and mares in the Breeders’ Cup, so they might as well see how she goes in the Gallant Bloom Handicap and work on the mistakes she makes.
