Pomeroys Pistol pointed toward the Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park
The best way for Pomeroys Pistol to atone for her four length defeat in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint to winner Musical Romance is to win the next sprint she is pointed toward. Hardacre Farm’s Pomeroys Pistol is fancying a start in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes at Gulfstream Park on 10 December, 2011, at about six furlongs on dirt.
The 3-year-old Amy Tarrant trained filly might come together with her Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint challengers, Musical Romance and Her Smile. But out of the three only Pomeroys Pistol appears likely to start in the Sugar Swirl.
The Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint was won by Musical Romance as Her Smile and Pomeroys Pistol finished third and fourth, respectively.
In her last start, Pomeroys Pistol, had a little trouble getting out of the gate as she bobbled briefly, but luckily did not stumble badly as Javier Castellano pulled her to go wide and from their she forced the pace in the Filly and Mare Sprint.
Prior to the Filly and Mare Sprint, the Florida bred 3-year-old daughter of Pomeroy, out of mare Prettyatthetable by Point Given, Pomeroys Pistol landed the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap.
It was at Belmont Park where Pomeroys Pistol downed Tamarind Hall in second and Lovely Lil in third, while the winner topped the six and a half furlongs in 1 minute and 16.60 seconds.
It was her second grade 2 win of the season. The first grade 2 race Pomeroys Pistol scored was in her second start of this season, the Grade 2 Forward Gal at Gulfstream Park at about seven furlongs on 30 January, 2011.
“There’s a pretty good chance she’s going to run in the Sugar Swirl,” owner-trainer Amy Tarrant said. “I gave her three weeks off in Ocala after the Breeders’ Cup. She’ll ship to Palm Meadows on Thursday, where I hope to maybe get one breeze into her before the race. I thought she ran a really great race in the Breeders’ Cup. She didn’t have the best of trips, but this filly has a big heart, and we were very proud of her. Churchill Downs is no easy track to run on, but we know she loves Gulfstream Park.”
