Pomeroys Pistol the one to beat in the Grade 3 Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream Park
The 3-year-old filly, Pomeroys Pistol, has always finished on the board at Gulfstream Park in 3 career starts at that venue, but that isn’t the only reason she should be the favourite to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes because the Amy Tarrant
trained filly is coming off a solid performance in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Churchill Downs.
The Grade 3 Sugar Swirl Stakes has reeled in eight fillies and mare to run over a distance of 6 furlongs on 10 December, 2011, at Gulfstream Park. The race is open for 3-year-old fillies and above.
Prior to her spirited 4th placed finish in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at about seven furlongs behind Musical Romance, Switch and Her Smile, who were the top three of the race, respectively, Pomeroys Pistol showed how easily she can
blast a field away of good horses in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom.
Hardacre Farm owned daughter of Pomeroy, out of mare Prettyatthetable by Point Given, Pomeroys Pistol unleashed her potent run to make runners like Tamarind Hall and Lovely Lil, look ordinary horses in the Gallant Bloom.
She bagged the grade 2 event at about six and a half furlongs on dirt in 1 minute and 16.60 seconds at Belmont Park 24 September, 2011.
The Florida bred filly has done pretty well at Gulfstream Park in her three starts over there. She finished second in the Grade 3 Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream Park to winner Final Mesa, but she managed to capture the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at about seven
furlongs at Gulfstream Park.
On 30 January, 2011, Pomeroys Pistol downed the Forward Gal lineup to win the seven furlong long sprint in 1 minute and 22.89 seconds, and in the process she downed Dancinginherdreams and Evil Queen as both of them finished second and third, respectively.
Talking about Pomeroys Pistol’s opponents in the Sugar Swirl, and the one that stands out is the graded winner in the race Pica Slew.
Certainly, Pomeroys Pistol with her record at Gulfstream Park and her recent form indicates that she is the one to beat, and as a 3-year-old against older fillies and mares, Pomeroys Pistol will be assigned top weight of 120 pounds.
