Pomersbach joins Royal Challengers again post-depression – Cricket News Update

Australian batsman Luke Pomersbach is all set to make his return to cricket in the Indian Premier League following a bout of depression, which saw him taking a break from the sport in 2011.

“When you play a lot of cricket, sometimes you need a bit of a break and need to start thinking about other things in the life,” he said.

“There were a few things off the field that I needed to deal with … I have seen a couple of specialists and I am right on top of things now. It was just a bit of a break and it freshened me up.”

The 27-year-old made a dramatic international debut in December 2007 against New Zealand – he was called in as a last-minute replacement for Brad Hodge, and ended up scoring 15 off a mere 7 deliveries.

However, while his debut was remarkable enough to place him on the selector’s radar, his chances were ruined by his suspension from Western Australia around the same time, following a drinking session with Shaun Marsh.

The left-handed batsman announced his intent to miss Australia’s 2011 domestic reason last year in September, citing health and well-being as reasons.

He makes a return to the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad (who were 2011 runners-up), and with an upcoming match on April 7 against the Delhi Daredevils, admitted that he was excited to be back among such experienced cricketers.

“It's fantastic to be a part of this … for someone who doesn't have much international experience,” he said, adding that it was particularly rewarding to be around top class players such as Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Daniel Vettori.

Pomersbach is not the only troubled cricketer to be making a return to cricket via the IPL. New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder also took an indefinite break from cricket earlier this year after he was handed a one-match ban following a drinking session with
teammate Doug Bracewell. He was also dropped from the Test squad owing to poor form after which he announced that he would be taking some time off. Ryder will be playing for the Pune Warriors in the current 5th season of the IPL.
