Pony Express-Newport defeat Power Horse to clinch 2011 USPA Sun Cup
Tomas Goti scored four goals and had an assist, as Pony Express-Newport nailed a 10-7 victory over Power Horse in the finals of the 2011 United States Polo Association (USPA) Sun Cup played at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, Florida.
In a crucial game of the event, the foursome of Pony Express displayed impressive game-play and scored ten goals against the seven of their competitors. Pony Express received a couple of goals in the head of handicap while Gene Goldberg added a goal from
the field in the early minutes of the game. The strikers from Power Horse were not sitting silently but could score only a single goal in the period. At the end of the first half of play, Pony Express was leading the game by two goals, 3-1.
In the second half of play, Tomas Goti scored another goal and further expanded the lead for Pony Express. In a counter-offence, Biddle managed a single goal to show their presence on the field. Pony Express maintained its two-goal lead, 4-2 after two frames
of action.
Juan Bollini of Power Horse notched a couple of goals and had it all even at four-all. The resilient defence from Power Horse kept Pony Express off the scoreboard in the seven and half minutes of play. At halftime, the two teams were holding a four-all deadlock
as they walked off to the sidelines.
After a tiny break between the two halves, the players from Pony Express cranked up their offence and obtained three goals while limiting Power Horse for a single score. The Pony Express trio of Goldberg, Lalor and Goti scored one goal apiece and expanded
the lead up to three points. Biddle, the lead player from Power Horse, accounted for another goal. Power Horse was trailing a couple of goals, 7-5 after four chukkars of play.
Interestingly, the second last set of play remained scoreless. Both sides played an impressive game in the seven and half minutes of play but to no avail. A large number of attacks were carried out from both sides but went wide and blocked by the other side.
With one chukkar left to play, Pony Express was sitting on top with a pair of goals, 7-5.
In the last frame, Bollini scored another goal at the start of the final set of play to reduce the lead down to a single score. However, Goti in a counter, scored off another penalty shot to score and regain the lead. Later in the period, Biddle connected
on another spot shot but it was the last offence from Power Horse. Goldberg and Goti scored one goal each and sealed the Pony Express victory at 10-7. With an impressive victory in the final game, Pony Express captured the title of the USPA Sun Cup.
