Ponytails breaking hair off, an athlete's problem. How can you treat it?

I am a girl runner, I run almost every single day: twice a day 6 days a week. Each day I spend about, 2 hours a day or just excersicing and running. And that requires that I have to put my hair up. I have medium length hair. Over time i have began to notice within about the last year or so more and more damage to my hair. Specifically to the front of my head, my hair just breaks off I know it is obviously from the use of ponytails. I also flat iron my hair but when school is out I never do because it is mostly straight any way. And I almost have a layer of bangs in the front my hair has broken off so bad.

So I was woundering what all you you had to say to that. I read some other posts and stuff from other websites and seems like it may be from pulling your hair back to tight. So I was woundering if that is my problem. If I don't pull my hair back tight then it just falls down because I am in constant running motion for up to 12-15 miles a day.

Please give me some tips

  1. why not put it in a slightly looser ponytail and use a headband to keep it back off of your face. I have the same problem so i generally try to change the style around a bit eg. bunches, plait ponytail etc... I'd ask your stylist/hairdresser about a good shampoo or conditioner to help prevent damage... Hope i helped =]

  2. being an athlete doesnt affect your hair breaking off..you just have unhealthy hair

  3. I'd probably would use a thin headband (like the ones from lululemon).  Your hair is most vulnerable when its wet, (even sweaty hair) so your hair becomes more delicate, thats why your hair breaks easily.  Wear a ball cap and tuck your hair throught the hole in the back (don't need an elastic for pony)

Here is a good article on haircare for athletes:
