  1. I don't agree that you need to purchase your own cue to get better, you should choose a cue with a good tip, and weight. Look for the ones that have the original tip in place, not the replacement caps that are noticeable because they are fatter. The tip should be rounded similar to a dime. A good weight would be 18-19 20 max. That is a great drill to improve your accuracy, but if you continue to have difficulty getting it right, consider the following:

Some players may be able to shoot the ball strait but due to there foot position and stance they are unable to. While standing up-right hold the cue stick in the desired position to shoot the cue ball. Position your body around the stick, feet shoulder width apart.

  3. I'm confused...Didn't Sean B describe a stop shot?  I think there might be a couple words missing...You need at least a little bottom to get the cue ball to come back.  Anyway, most important is your stroke...You need someone who knows something to look at it. In the meantime, for practice, try staying down until all the balls stop moving.  Don't lean into your shots and do relax your wrist (the one doing the stroking).  I'm not sure what kind of player you are, but perhaps try throwing out three balls on the table and taking ball in hand.  Shoot them numerically and see how often you get out.  Add balls one at a time as you get better at running out. Don't be afraid to ask the local player for a little advice...He's probably used to it and won't mind showing you a couple shots that come up so often in play.  Good luck :)

  4. It'll be a great help if you possess your own cue. That way you can be familiar with the cue's "style" i.e. weight distribution, sliding motion, the tip... Get your own cue and start with simple shots. Try this trick: hit a cue ball dead centre and leave your cue in the follow-thru position. Can the cue ball straight back at you? If no, it means you didn't hit the ball right in the middle (prolly a lil English). Practise with the cue and one other ball. You gotta take into consideration all the factors as well, coz the game is not just about potting the coloured ball but also the cue ball placement, so you gotta control the speed, force and angle of your shot. Once you are pretty good with the angles, work on placing the cue ball. Good luck!

  5. other than reading books im not realy sure what you mean

You could practice a good line of BS that works for me

  6. You get better at pool the same way you get to Carnagie Hall.... practice, practice, practice.  In my day, which was a LONG time ago, I played a lot of Snooker.  The game that seperates the men from the boys.  Practice on a snooker table, if you can find on these days, and when you get back on a straight pool table, the pockets will look like bushel baskets.
