Question:

Pool leak, normal methods ineffective. Any ideas?

My pool has been leaking for a good while now and we have called pool techs out twice to fix a burnt pump because of low levels of water. Both techs were unable to find the problem.

I contacted a complete different company who has an amazing track record but they wont be able to come out for two weeks.

I was wondering if anyone had some more ideas. Here is some info:

- In-ground pool

- Pool leaks with pump on

- Pool leaks with pump off

- Pool leak is not due to heat

- Color dye not working

- Pump and area inspected - no leaks.

Thanks.

  1. you need a pool company that does leak dections they will find the leak and give an estimate of how much to fix let me know what happens jldailey2000@yahoo.com eleven years experince

  2. You won't like this answer.......

It's leaking from a pipe under the pool.  Somewhere between the bottom and the filter.   The company may be able to pinpoint where with an in-pipe video camera.  Or you can block the different ports (places where water flows out to/from the filter) and see which pipe empties itself first.

There might be a way to sleeve, or seal the pipe from the inside.  I'm not sure of the newest technologies.  But if these don't exist, be prepared to dig- ALOT.  It will have to be repaired by getting to it by hand.  It won't be easy or cheap, sorry for the bad news.

  3. OK a couple of thoughts. First of all your normal pool service company doesn't really specialize in leak detection even though they claim too. Swimming pool leak detection is a craft that is only mastered by a few. I suggest you look for a pool leak detection company that has good reviews and sound advice. Pick up the phone and call one and put their knowledge to the test, ask questions don't just schedule an expensive visit. Make sure they are true experts not just bill collectors. SHOP WISELY...

  4. Try to isolate different pipe areas.  It sounds like it is in the area of the pump.  Turn off all water to it by plugging,  Usually pump and connections are the problem.  if leak stops, investigate that one area further.  Keep it simple.  At least you will help the next repair guy spend less time.  Mike

  5. Can you dig around the edge of the pool and see where the ground is the wettest?  It may also be sinking a little bit.
