  1. Absolutely!  You should run a pool, depending on its use, a minimum of 8 hours per day.  Public pools run 24/7.  But, if you stop the pump you stop circulation and the water is no longer filtered.  You should also make certain that there are chemicals in the water.

BTW ... Why would you ask the question as your question is really lame.

  2. yes most pool pumps unless they are the easy set ups are made to run 24/7. if you are in the pool and want to save some life on your pump if you move around in there all over a lot then you could turn it off while you are in and then turn it on when you are finished.

  3. Yes you should. And it also needs to be longer than the 8 hours per day that someone else has posted.

Pool pumps and filters are sized for a swimming pool so that they turn over the pool volume 1.5 times in a 24 hour period. You need all of that pool water to go through the filter at least once per day or your chemical costs will soar and the likelihood of your water going green also increases. The bare minimum , if you decide to put your pump on a timer, is 18 hours of run per day. That gets you a turnover rate of 1. Ideally, though, you ought to run it 24/7. It's cheaper in electricity than it is to add chemical to offset the lack of turnover rate usually, unless this pool sees very little swimming action and has very little debris falling into it..

  4. Most pumps have a port on the volute side of the pump and one on the pressure side of the pump.  A vacuum/pressure gauge can be temporarily attached to these ports to measure your plumbing dynamic head or circulation.  Preform test with clean filter, strainer baskets etc.  Through a simple formula you can determine the Total Dynamic Head of the existing pump and with the pump makers graph of the performance characteristics of that pump, determine the number of gallons per minute the current setup is doing and knowing the gallons of your pool you can figure how long the pump should be running.  In California we figure turns of 1 time per day but that is a starting point and likely fine in the winter but more turns in the winter.  I have a 13,000 gallon pool/spa that I turn over once with a 2Hp pump, way too large, that does one turn in about 3.4 hours.
