I recently rescued 2 brother ferrets they are about 6months old and super duper cute!! They just dont want to p**p in their litter boxes!! I have had 11 other ferrets and they were easy to litter train, some of them would even "fake p**p" (get in the litter box, backup and pretend to p**p) just to get a l**k of ferretone. But not these boys I have..they just want to play or swim!! It has been about 8 years since I had young ferrets, I am more used to caring for the ailing seniors :) So give me some new litter training tips. Its so exciting to have bouncy healthy ferts..but not so much their p**p!!

They are eating high quality ferret food w/ no corn or gluten or rasin juice!!

  1. Protect your corners, lay down newspaper with masking tape holding it to the walls.

They're pretty young yet, they may not know where to go if they came from a place that never used litter boxes.

  2. Yeah for the good food choice!

My kids are free roam so potty training is a must.  No p**p in my corners,  I get new rescues all the time and found the best way to get everyone using the poopers is to put one in every corner or place where they poo.  Newcombers are shy about using someone elses toilets so I accomomdate with more boxes until they are comfortable. I have also made my own boxes out of cat litter pans by using my dremel and cutting the front down so they can easily back in without having to climb over the edge.  After I cut down the front, I put tape across the sharp edges for comfort.  As you know, ferrets have a short fuse and don't spend a lot of time looking for the box but just take the nearest corner and go.  Put a box there,  They will either go in the box of pick another spot.  I currently have 15 boxes but will reduce that down to about 12 when everyone settles down and uses the 12 that are scattered around the house appropriately so that there is at least one in every room including the bathrooms.  Ferrets dictate where the p**p will go and I have never really found a way to persuade them differently so if you want it in a box, put a box where they are depositing.  For my kids, treats, punishments, scoldings just never seem to work,  If they are having problems getting it in the box, I just pick them up when I see them backing up and put them in the box and say good job.  They will catch on but remember, it will never be 100% all the time, so please excuse the accidents!
