Question:

Poor little bird?

This poor little baby bird fell out of it's nest, I guess. It was laying crippled in our backyard. Everytime you went close to it it would go nuts and the other birds in our tree would go into attack mode.We saw it this morning and hoped maybe the parents would have picked it up but by 6pm they still had not. My husband tried to pick it up (with a gloved hand) and it went ballistic. We have a golden retriever that goes out in our yard so we didn't want him to attack it. We finally got the nerve to grab it and put it in a tree. I feel so sorry for it. Should we have done something else?

  1. If the bird has a broken wing or other serious injury, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation center.  Do not handle it yourself, or give it food or water. Keep children and pets away from the injured bird. To transport the bird the the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, place the injured bird in a box with air holes or in a paper bag lined with soft tissues.

  2. What I would of done is called the local huimane society and tell them, they usually take it and help it heal, or if beyond healing point, they would put it to sleep. Either way, it would of been the better solution in my eyes to call them

  3. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly.   You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it.  If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest.  Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched.  If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival.  Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own.  Look for a rehab here:
