Poor performance in India Open costs Olympic berth to Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei h*i
Malaysia’s top Women’s Doubles shuttlers Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei h*i could not live up to expectations as their poor run in last week’s India Open Super Series cost them a slot at Olympic Games 2012.
Pei Tty and Eei h*i, currently ranked at number 16, will slip down to a lower position which indicates that they will miss out the chance of qualifying for Olympics, which will start in the ending week of July.
The Malaysian duo lost in the second round of India Open which eliminated their chances to participate in their last Olympics as they are expected to retire in a few months.
Ng Chin Chai, who is Badminton Association of Malaysia's coaching and training  chairman made it clear that six Malaysian players have made the cut to qualify for Olympic Games.
He also said that according to their calculations, Pei Tty and Eei h*i will slip down to 21st position in the Mixed Doubles world rankings and only the top-16 pairs will compete in Olympics.
Chin Chai said, “We made our own calculations after the India Open and it’s heartbreaking to learn that Eei h*i-Pei Tty will miss what would have been their third Olympics. It is unofficial until BWF make the announcement, but we reckon that they have only just missed the mark.”
He further added, “It looks like Eei h*i-Pei Tty will miss qualification by just one rung. Their performances in the Australian Open and Asian Badminton Championships also affected their position. They lost quite a lot of points there.”
However, Chin Chai is optimistic that six Malaysian shuttlers will qualify for Olympics when Badminton World Federation (BWF) will reveal its world rankings on Thursday, May 3.
Among the expected qualifiers will be Lee Chong Wei, Tan Boon Heong – Koo Kien Keat, Goh Liu Ying – Chan Peng Soon and Tee Jing Yi.
Pei Tty and Eei h*i, who announced earlier that Olympics will be their last event, are expected to take retirement before the mega event because their hopes of qualifying in this tournament have been dashed as they failed to prove their worth in India Open.
