i have a friend who recently got divoced... during the process, she has had to move back home to her parents house, until he moves out, and she took her 5 or 6 month old puppy with her... her parents dont allow animals in the house, but they do have a 2 year old dog of their own who get along great with the puppy... anyway, the dogs sleep together in the garage at night (something she would never do if her puppy didnt at least have another doggie friend to be with) and during the day, the older dog goes out on a runner while no one is home (4-6 hours, max) and the puppy goes on a little chain, maybe 3 ft long... they get to run around together a bit in the morning, off leash while someone is watching them, and eat breakfast and then again for a bit when either the parents or she gets home (again 4-6 hours) then later at night, they eat dinner, run around for about an hour, the go to bed... this should only be for about a month, till she can get her ex out of the house and then, she can get back into it and the puppy can have the yard and not be alone and on a tiny chain, but i am concerned... the puppy seems happy still, and healthy, but it seems like a long time to be chained up outside... but she has no other alternative - so i am just wondering, is this going to be ok for the next couple of weeks? will it cause any irreversable damage to the puppy, or will everything be ok when it all goes back to normal, and the puppy has the comforts of its home and bed again?

  1. As long as it's only temporary, and as long as she gives him lots of love (and he has a playmate), he should be alright.

  2. I think the pup will be fine.  I would put him in a doggie carrier rather than a 3 ft chain but either way he'll be fine for the 4-6 hrs that you mentioned.  I know several people who leave their dogs in carriers during the day while they work.  A short chain isn't a lot different as long as he can't get hung up on anything, has access to water and shade/shelter.

  3. For a short period of time, the puppy will be fine. I would suggest a longer chain for him though. He needs more that three feet of freedom. I hope they are leaving the dogs plenty of fresh water, and they have a place to go in case of in climate weather.

  4. As long as it can run around and gets played with and it's only for a bit, it should be fine.

  5. If the one dog stays out all day its fine for the other, just make sure she gets is a longer leash idk 12-15 feet so it can really move, and that there is a constant water supply that they cant knock over or break
