Poor sales of PSOne titles on Xperia PLAY, Ghost Recon: Future Solider delayed till Q1 2012
The latest numbers on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY (pronounced PlayStation Phone) show that the amount of PSOne titles downloaded by users is embarrassingly low.
Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia PLAY with 10 titles available for download and play on its exclusive PlayStation app, not including the pre-installed platforming classic Crash Bandicoot, but according to reports, the number of downloads for the titles
are below 1000.
Jumping Flash and Destruction Derby are the more popular downloads; tallying in at around 100 downloads. The price of the titles seems to be one of the main reasons as £3.99 may be too high a price to pay for a PSOne title, while others are arguing that
the lack of choice and popular titles like Syphon Filter, Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo and Tekken may also play a role.
When asked to comment on the poor sales, Sony Ericsson’s Head of Market Development, Dominic Neil-Dwyer said that the company was not concerned over the poor sales, citing the limited choice of titles, and the fact that the technology was relatively new,
as the main reasons.
“There’s only a few, at the minute, PlayStation One titles there,” Dominic explained, “and there’s the whole PlayStation as a content provider exclusive to the device, the story about that, that will emerge and people will see.”
There was no confirmation or comment on when more titles would be released for download for the PLAY as the product looks to establish itself in a highly competitive market.
Ghost Recon: Future Solider delayed
Ubisoft’s highly acclaimed Ghost Recon series’ latest title Ghost Recon: Future Solider has been delayed at least until the first financial quarter of the next year. The highly anticipated title has seen live-action trailers and plenty of details about the
game released to the gaming public, but the game itself seems a mystery in terms of its release date.
Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO announced that the title would be released in Q1 next year (Ubisoft’s financial year’s fourth quarter) which did not do much to lower speculation of whether or not the title had been delayed.
When asked why no specific date had been given Guillemot had this to say, "We want first to assure the best quality possible as well as to avoid the very crowded Christmas landscape in the shooter genre."
Apparently Ubisoft does not want to risk going against PlayStation’s Uncharted 3 or Modern Warfare 3’s rumoured release date around the same time.
The reasons were the same given last year when Ghost Recon: Future Soldier’s release date was shifted from March to this year’s Christmas period, but it seems fans will have to wait another couple of months before they can get their hands on the game.
