Poor teamwork and low confidence push Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat into despair – Badminton news
Tan Boon Heong, the Men’s Doubles ace shuttler of Malaysia, said that poor team work and low confidence ate the major problems which have dragged their performance down in all major international events.
Tan Boon and Kien Keat, currently World Number Five, are suffering with the worst bad patch of their career as they have not won any major tournament for the last 20 months and are really worried over their bad run.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) also made changes in the coaching staff to put the top pair on the right track but all of the efforts have brought them nothing so far, as they have recently suffered with two consecutive defeats from the hands
of the lower ranked pairs.
Tan Boon said that there is something wrong with the team work of both shuttlers as they are not playing with good coordination. However, he appreciated the efforts of all concerned parties in taking steps for ending their poor performance at international
events.
In the recent tournaments including Denmark Open Premier Super Series and French Open Super Series, the Malaysian duo failed to cross the opening rounds by losing to the lower ranked rivals.
The situation gets worst especially when there is not much time left in the 2012 London Olympics. If they continue playing in a way they are doing right now, they will lose their seeded position in the Olympic Games.
While talking about the poor performance of the pair, Boon Heong said they are at fault as they are continuously failing in achieving their target. He also expressed that their combination is not going well, which is a big hurdle in their way to perform
up to the expectations.
He said, “The blame lies solely with us. We are experiencing some problems with our teamwork and our confidence is quite low. In Denmark and France, we had zero combination and got frustrated as our game simply didn’t work."
He further added, “It made us play more cautiously and, being low on confidence, our opponents took full advantage of it.”
Tan Kim Her, the Men’s Doubles’ chief coach said that the new coaches are working with the duo and it will take a little time to get the things streamlined. He is optimistic that the duo will regain the lost confidence and will get back on the right track.
