  1. U.S.A

  2. Yes, the UN Human devlopment index is a good measure that blends life expectancy, per capita GDP, and education levels to derive the most impverished nation on Earth. No doubt whoever is the winner of this is in Sub-Saharan Africa, home to the bottom 22 nations on the list. Some nations like Somalia, North Korea and Afghanistan have so little official information they are left off the lsit altogether.

Some nations, like Cuba, are very poor, but have a relativley long lifespan and good education. Simply because they do not use capitalist engines to drive the economy, so per capita GDP is very low. It would be a paradise for most Tanzanians, though.

Poor is relative, the nation I think would be worst is Zimbabwe or North Korea, where economic activity is virtually banned by nations, and being rich is practically a crime.

  3. Based on my research it is Zimbabwe. They have a GDP per capita of about $200, an estimated unemployment rate of 80%, real GDP growth rate of -6.1%, 68% of the population below the poverty line, an inflation rate of 10,453% based on official data (private sector estimates are much higher), and the public debt is 211.9% of GDP. Not to mention the rampant HIV / AIDs in that country (25% of the population is infected). The life expectancy is only 40 years old.

  4. Poorest Countries in the World

Rank Country GDP - per capita

    1 Malawi $ 600

    2 Somalia $ 600

    3 Comoros $ 600

    4 Solomon Islands $ 600

5 Congo, Democratic Republic of the $ 700

    6 Burundi $ 700

    7 East Timor $ 800

    8 Tanzania $ 800

    9 Afghanistan $ 800

    10 Yemen $ 900

  5. You can't rank poor countries by their GDP per capita.  They use the Human development index.  So number 177 on the HDI for 2007 was Sierra Leone.  Zimbabwae is 151.  The lowest based on last reported figures is Somalia followed by Afghanistan, but that was over a decade ago.  Surprisingly North Korea doesn't do that badly on it.  Even more oddly we've fought wars in all three of those countries before.
