Poorly Renault Scenic?

Question

I have a 1999 1.6 Renault Scenic that started overheating and sounding like a diesel. Also struggling at low revs. I took it into a garage and they said the head gasket had gone They've replaced it but the car now hunts and judders on overrun or when driving slowly in 2nd. Anybody got any ideas?

check the lambda sensor by an auto eletrician or it could be the stepper motor in the inlet manifold...
