Okay....I'm Thinking that corn is dried and made into popcorn.....

And This guy says that corn goes through a chemical change while it's being popped in the microwave. and after the chemical change occurs that the corn turns into a grain.

So I Think Pop Corn is a vegetable because it's just popped corn right?

Or is pop corn really a grain???

Please Give A Detailed Answer Cuz I Really Want To Know How And Why And All That You Know About It. =] Thank You!!!

  1. All grains are technically vegetable matter because they are plants. But in the culinary world they are used quite differently than vegetables. Popcorn is a unique grain because it isn't ground into flour like many grains, but it is eaten whole. It has a lot of fiber so in that way it is similar to a vegetable.

  2. It's neither its a starch.

  3. Though not what we commonly consider 'a' vegetable, corn IS 'vegetable'...not 'animal' or 'mineral'.

  4. It's a grain when it's dried, a vegetable when hydrated.

  5. Vegetable is used for all edible parts of plants, like the "fruit" of a plant (a non-sweet fruit), stems, leaves, roots etc

A grain is defined as (as far as corn is concerned)

1.foodstuff prepared from the starchy grains of cereal grasses

2.dry seed-like fruit produced by the cereal grasses: e.g. wheat, barley, Indian corn

3.a cereal grass; "wheat is a grain that is grown in Kansas"

Corn does belong to the grass family, so it falls under the grain classification, however we also use it as vegetable.

I would call popcorn a grain, because I won't serve it up with my sunday roast as a vegetable :)

  6. starch

  7. your!!  "This Guy" is practicing Fractured Physics..

IT  don't make any difference what heat source you use...

a pan of oil, air popper, M/W ,camp fire or some fancy commercial carousel

To tell the truth - -- -the individual kernel has water within the shell (hull) when the water boils and turns to steam... it has nowhere to go - - - POP- - IT has merely presents a new appearance..  No chemical change it is still corn..

BY use it is a treat,, and found with the candy,, as corn it is still a seed and might be classed a vegetable if you boil it.

    Produce is classed by USE

  8. Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel -- the bran, germ, and endosperm. Refined grains have been milled -- a process that removes the bran and germ -- and removes dietary fiber, iron, and many B vitamins. Popcorn, bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products.

  9. It's a grain.
