If you have a Sky or Digibox, it could be a corrupted signal from either of those.

Check the plug and any adaptors fitted, the popping could be down to a bad mains connection which could give rise to a fire.

Visually check the wires, plugs and any adaptors for any damage, discolouration, signs of overheating etc. and replace anything that looks damaged.

Plug it back in and turn on then try wigling the wires a bit, if you hear popping or sizzling then turn of and check them again or get someone who knows electricity to have a look.

It can sometimes bee loose wiring in the wall socket but don't go near that unless qualified.
