I've ALWAYS admired and loved Indian culture, but never had an friends from that country. Can you tell me where I should begin in order to fully enjoy Bollywood, and Indian culture?

Please make lists so that I can copy & paste - thank you!! :-)

  1. Indian movie rental stores are always a great location to begin.  Lacking that, some Indian groceries rent DVDs or sell used copies.  And if you don't have that either, you could always try a major movie chain store or buy them off the internet.

If you're still new to Indian movies, an easy-starter is the 2002 film "The Guru" with Heather Graham and another 2002 film, "Bollywood/Hollywood."

If you are willing to deal with the sometimes-long-running-times (they can be 3 hours or longer) and the twisted plots, I'll just rattle off a list for you.

    Dhoom 2 (2006)

    Guru (2006)

    Salaam - e - ishq (2006)

    Fanaa (2006)

    Gangster (2006)

    Red (2007)

    Woh lamhe (2006)

    Don (2006)

    Vivah (2006)

    Nehlle pe dehlla (2007)

    Om Shanti Om (2007)

  3. Orange's answer is great. You can also try YouTube: it isn't the best viewing format, but lots of people post subtitled Bollywood movies as a way to introduce newbies to the genre. A few movies that always go over well, at least in my experience:

    Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

    Om Shanti Om

    Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

    Krrish

    Nayak

    Paheli

    Asoka

    Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

    Astitva

    Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

    Dil To Pagal Hai

    Fanaa

    Dil Se

    Chori Chori Chupke Chupke

    Rangeela

As for Indian culture, as well as more great stuff on Bollywood, I recommend checking out BollyWHAT.com. It's an excellent resource for newcomers, and the forum is loaded with all kinds of information about everything from Indian food and fashion to cultural details as seen in films.

Welcome to the Bollywood fandom! =D
