  2. Unlike regular kangaroos who have flourished since white man came to Australia, tree kangaroos have suffered very badly through loss of habitat (forest).  Tree kangaroos are also found in New Guinea where their numbers have been decimated since missionaries came to the country and changed their beliefs (they used to believe some parts of the forests were evil no-go areas).  Now the local population has trebled and they have guns.  The number of tree kangaroos in New Guinea was thought to have gotten as low as 100 in 2000.  In 2006 it was thought to be up to 200 with the help of some conservation help from Australia.  There is a lot of work being done in far north Queensland (particularly the Atherton tablelands) to preserve their habitat and increase their numbers.  They really are the most adorable animals.
