Improving is like perpetual motion for the 3-year-old Populist Politics, as he keeps on getting better and better. No matter who he faces or what race he is running in, the Don’t Get Mad colt keeps stepping up his game.
The Thomas Amoss trained colt, appeared in the Grade 2 Super Derby on the Louisiana Downs' dirt course, under jockey Gerard Melancon, to conquer the distance of 1 1/8 miles on 10 September, 2011.
The Klaravich Stables owned 3-year-old, turned in a powerful performance against the likes of Prayer for Relief and Awesome Bet, as he rolled in third against a superior contingent on paper.
The third place finish prompted trainer Thomas Amoss to give the colt another shot at graded competition next month.
At the latest, Amoss has revealed that the colt is now under consideration to start in the Grade 2 $500,000 Indiana Derby on 1 October, 2011, at Hoosier Park.
Populist Politics entered the Super Derby on race day, and with already a couple of Louisiana bred stakes to his name, the colt with familiar surroundings was kept off the pace by jockey Gerard Melancon.
Tracking leaders right from the outset for almost six furlongs, he set fractions of 1 minute and 15.49 seconds for the six furlong mark.
Super Derby was the colt’s graded stakes' debut, and he ran like a professional runner, closing the gap with his fellow experienced runners throughout the race.
Populist Politics ran a fantastic race and finished 2 ½ lengths behind the winner, Prayer for Relief, who went wire to wire to win the race.
This time around, Populist Politics will have an even stronger unit to contend with.
Caleb’s Posse, who defeated Uncle Mo in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga, will also be a part of the line-up, come 1st October.
Populist Politics is no slouch, and for sure not short on ammunition. He will most certainly bring his A game when he needs it.
