Porntip Buranaprasertsuk defeats Ji Hyun Sung in quarter-final of the Thailand Open GP Gold 2011
Thailand’s Porntip Buranaprasertsuk kept the local hopes alive, as she has beat Korea’s Ji Hyun Sung in the Women’s Singles quarter-final of the Thailand Open GP Gold 2011, in Thailand, on June 10.
The World Number Nine, Porntip, who is also the fourth seed in this home event, worked quite well in a straight-set match and sent the eighth seed, Ji Hyun Sung of Korea, packing in 46 minutes.
Porntip has improved a lot during the last couple of years, as she has become one of the main contenders in every tournament she contests in. In the quarter-final battle against Ji Hyun, the Thai shuttler delivered a tremendous performance as she played
terrific badminton in both sets.
The first set was quite interesting, as both ladies remained toe-to-toe until the end of the opening half of the game, where the local shuttler managed a two-point lead of 11-9. Porntip was playing a planned game, which earned her a dominating position in
the opening set.
After taking a break for one-minute, Porntip increased her speed by picking the shuttle c**k quite early. Her powerful drives and tumbling net strokes were just incredible, which put her challenger under pressure. The Thai shuttler finished the first set
with a five-point gap of 21-16, in 22 minutes.
The second game was very tight, as both shuttlers demonstrated a game of the highest class. The Korean was playing well and managed a two-point lead over his rival. However, Porntip managed to level the score by playing with precision.
In the following half of the second game, the Thai started to build pressure on Ji Hyun, who missed some opportunities at the crucial stage of the game. Porntip manipulated all the weak areas of her challenger and executed perfect strokes on the side lines
of the court.
Porntip grabbed the second set with a tight margin of 21-19, by sparing 24 minutes on the court. The result of this 46-minute quarter-final fight was 21-16 and 21-19.
In the Women’s Singles semi-final, Porntip will take on the seventh seed, Xuerui Li of China, who toppled the top seed, Saina Nehwal of India, in the quarter-final of the event.
