Porsche going for Le Mans rather than Formula 1
The well known automobile manufacturing company Porsche recently played down the rumours that they are interested in becoming a part of Formula 1 by 2013. They added that they are thinking about tackling Le Mans more rather than Formula 1.
According to Matthias Mueller, the CEO of Porsche, Formula 1 has a lot of drawbacks as compared to the rest of motorsports and as a result, they are not willing to become a part of the sport anytime soon.
There were rumours that Volkswagen was also considering the option of becoming a part of F1 by 2013. The main reason behind this development is that the FIA is introducing some environment friendly rules in order to make Formula 1 more “green”.
Porsche is also a member of the Volkswagen Group but according to Volkswagen’s representative Hans-Joachim Stuck, ideas about making an entry into Formula 1 are discussed a lot within the company despite the fact that Formula 1 is pretty expensive and there’s
a lot of risk in making an F1 entry.
“There are undoubtedly some attractive aspects. But there are other sides to it as well. Formula One is very expensive, while success is far less predictable [than in other series],” he told the media.
Other than that, Porsche revealed its new racing car 918 RSR at the Detroit motor show and it is believed that the 918 RSR is a showcase of its technology. Despite the fact that it is not eligible for any motorsport at the moment, it is truly a work of art
and this invention proves that Porsche has the ability to make good racing cars as well.
“We would not necessarily have to line up against Audi, but we would do it if we need to and it would mean there are two of the [VW] group's brands fighting in the races. The likelihood that the group wins would therefore obviously be increased,” Mueller
admitted.
Since Audi is one of their main rivals in this current scenario, it would be interesting to see how the two companies plan their strategies. However, he urged all the VW brands to unite and “agree on a motorsport strategy for the coming years”.
