Portable DVD player Scratches the disc

I've had this DVD player for about six months. Recently it started to scratch all the DVDs or CDs that are played in it. Why is this happening?My seven year old uses it the most, could it have been dropped? what happened? Appreciate any help i can get,Thanks. Romero
