Portland Timbers 0-1 http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Drew-Moor-c11678’s late goal saves the day for Gary Smith – MLS News
Colorado Rapids visited Jeld-Wen Field on Saturday, June 11 to play against Portland Timbers and notched up three points with the final score line reading 1-0 in the visitors’ favour. This was the Timbers’ second straight loss at home after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/DC-United-c38901 beat
John Spencer’s men two weeks ago.
Although Rapids proved the stronger of the outfits from time to time, this was a competition between the two goalkeepers, Timbers’ http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Matt-Pickens-c24777. The reigning MLS Cup champions’ forward line-up seemed helpless when faced with Perkins.
However, Drew Moor managed to slot home a late goal to take three points off Jeld-Wen.
Pickens managed to earn yet another clean sheet after a physically demanding 90 minutes.
The Rapids came to Rose City on the back of six consecutive draws. Had it not been for Moor’s goal in the extra time, the streak could have been stretched to seven matches.
The home team started the proceedings in brisk pace but the Rapids were not short of talent with their replies. The visitors played a physical game throughout and the result was two Portland injuries. Kenny Cooper and Mamadou Danso were the two causalities.
Just 11 minutes into the game, the Rapids midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jeff-Larentowicz-c18241 forced Perkins to come off his line. Larentowicz’s shot from distance could have knocked the back of the net had it not been for Perkins in the middle to parry it away.
Kenny Cooper fell victim of the physical affair in the first-half. The player was crowded in the in the Rapids penalty area and emerged with a bleeding forehead. As per the rules, he had to leave the ground but returned minutes later with a bandaged head.
Timbers defender and goal scorer in the last two matches, Danso, got injured while trying to win a ball in his own penalty area. The 28-year-old challenged Caleb Folan for an aerial ball and injured his shoulder in the process. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Horst-c10505 was brought in
to replace the Gambia international as he left the pitch on a stretcher in the 23rd
minute. The physical affair continued and the first-half ended with the score line still untroubled.
The second period was yet another physical stint with four bookings in quick succession. Both teams received two each to remain at par in every department of the game.
The bandaged Cooper managed to test Pickens in the 57th minute, striking a full volley goal-wards only for the Rapids goalkeeper to punch it away, keeping the score line intact.
However, much to the Timbers embarrassment, Moor found the net in closing stages of the game to take home the first win in almost two months. Jamie set-up a free-kick from 22 yards out that was poorly defended by the Timbers http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Defence-c38904 and Moor received a loose
ball with goal at his mercy. The defender made no mistakes with a lobbed finish to send the visiting fans into raptures.
