Portland Trail Blazers' injury-plagued centre Greg Oden faces yet another setback - NBA Update
After a recent catastrophic development, it is safe to say that 24 years old Greg Oden is one of the most unfortunate players in the history of NBA.
Oden, who has not featured in any games since December 5th 2009 due to recurrent injuries, has faced a massive setback that has not only pulled him out of the complete 2011-12 season, but has also put his hoops future
in jeopardy.
Last week, Oden underwent a left knee surgery for the third time in his short career. Although it was a minor one surgery, doctors found a micro facture in the knee during the operation and carried out another surgery.
With this, Oden’s hopes of playing this season have come to an end.
"It's hard to put into words the heartbreak for everyone involved, but especially for Greg. He's a young man who has experienced a great number of physical challenges in his playing career and today is yet another significant setback
for him," Trail Blazers president Larry Miller said. "We have a lot of empathy for Greg and his family during this difficult time."
Oden, who has played two seasons for Portland Trail Blazers, was hoping to get back in action this season. However during the training sessions in December, a routine check-up spotted a ligament injury in his knee. Oden had healed
significantly after missing three months of NBA action and his chances of making comeback had increased.
However, all those hopes have been shattered now.
Blazers coach Nate McMillan, who was in Los Angeles with the team on Monday night, expressed immense melancholy when the tragic news reached him.
"I'm sure he's saying, 'Why Me?' Sometimes in life, things like that happen, and you wonder why it's happening to you, "Nate said "Some of these injuries have occurred, not only on the floor but off the floor”
Oden, who announced himself for the NBA draft in 2007, was the first pick by Blazers. In his first two seasons, he showed a lot of promise and established himself as one of the main players in the team with his outstanding skills.
His career average of 9.4 points 7.3 boards does not do justice to his talent, as he only played one and a half season and had he played in 2010-11 season, his stats would have been much better.
