Portland Trail Blazers hold players-only meeting
After absorbing their third consecutive loss and their fifth in their last seven games, the Portland Trail Blazers had a players-only meeting on Sunday 28 November to discuss their recent
struggles.
The Blazers absorbed a tough 98-96 defeat against the New Jersey Nets on Sunday night, and the players were visibly frustrated after the game, which prompted them to hold the meeting, but
no one divulged what the discussion would be about.
“We're at a tough point right now,” said Portland guard Brandon Roy. “It's a young season. We have lost three games in a row and we are .500, so it is a difficult time. But we have to stick
together and really see what we're made of.”
Wesley Matthews, on the other hand, said that their conversations were very good and he is hoping that the players-only meeting would turn their fortunes around this season and improve their
current record of eight win and eight losses.
“We talked about what we need to do,” said Matthews, who scored 25 points to go with four rebounds and four assists against the Nets. “We don't feel we're an 8-8 team and that's the gist
of it. The thing about the NBA is you have got a whole bunch of games in a short span of time, so you have to lose this and move on to the next one.”
Veteran centre Marcus Camby also said he is confident that their meeting had a positive result and he reiterated that the Blazers are not yet pushing the panic button this season despite
their lacklustre performances in their last seven games this season.
“No, there's no panic around here,” Camby said. “This isn't a crisis situation. But we understand that we have to play a whole letter better than we've been playing.”
The Blazers will to try to break their three-game slump when they travel to Philadelphia to face the 76ers on Tuesday 30 November.
