Portland Trail Blazers star Brandon Roy using doubt as motivation – NBA Update
Portland Trail Blazers’ injury prone star Brandon Roy has revealed that he is anxiously looking forward to next season. The player is once again on the road to recovery and said he was determined to use all the negativity about
him to fuel his performances on the court.
Brandon Roy’s career hangs by a thread due to the tragic injury problems with his knees. Roy has consistently had trouble with his knees and has failed to live up to his potential and the expectation of his fans in the last 3 or
so years. The shooting guard has not been able to get a consistent run for the Trail Blazers and there are many who believe that he will never be the player he was, before it all turned south.
Questions remain over Roy’s ability to be back to the mobile guard, that tortured NBA defences with regularity? Or the high flyer that went to the All Star game three years running? At the moment Brandon cannot answer those questions,
he is just trying to stay positive,
“I just don’t even want to put anything out there,” said Roy, who turned 27 on Saturday. “I don’t want to get hopes up one way or the other. I’m just trying to work to get better. And if I surprise a million people, that’s better.
Hopefully, I can surprise some people.”
“I’m definitely fine with how some things are said, and what people are saying about me,” Roy said. “I kind of like to be doubted and counted out. That’s a good place for me. I like this role.”
The player revealed that he is doing more and more work in the gym and has taken to the court recently for some light action. The former All Star conceded that he didn’t feel he could jump like he did before, but also pointed out
a number of positives. For one, Roy believes his mobility is returning and he felt good twisting and turning on the court. For another, the player reported no pain or swelling in the knees at all.
He revealed that his knees definitely feel stronger now. It has been quite a while since his last surgery, back in January, and things seem to be going well thus far. The off season has also helped him get some much needed rest
and work on getting better.
With the NBA in lockout mode and no end to the disagreement between players and owners in sight so far, there is plenty of time for Roy to keep working on his fitness. When the season starts and the player takes to the court, it
would be interesting to see whether he is let off the leash right from the go or his minutes are gradually increased to try and integrate his body back into the game.
